History of the Programme
The Programme began in September 1976 as a unit of the Department of Mathematics in collaboration with Faculties of Engineering and Social Sciences specifically with Departments of Computer Science, Business Administration, Economics and Statistics with a first batch of about fifty (50) students.
The programme has made great contributions throughout the history of the world by supplying the technical “know how” in management of industries and establishments.
It is a well known fact that no industry or establishment can survive without application of mathematics in the management and administration of such system.
With the rapid growth of banking institutions and financial houses and industries (large and small scales), consultancy (management and engineering) in the country the application of Industrial Mathematics cannot be over-emphasized.
The programme is oriented towards the teaching of courses in Mathematics, Statistics, Business Administration, Accounting and Economics that will instigate an improved and prudent management of the nation’s economy. The programme is geared towards management of industry, banking, business, commerce, consultancy (management and engineering) and so on.


The programme has been reviewed severally to provide models for the new trends in industrial management and to prosecute the acceleration of nation economic development.
The programme at present offers courses in mathematics, statistics, economics, business administration, computer science and accounting.
The enrolment of students into the programme has continued to grow especially at the 100 and 200 levels. The trend is likely to continue in the future particularly because of the expanding services provided by this programme in industries and establishments.


Philosophy
The guiding philosophy of the programme is to produce graduates with a thorough grasp of the fundamental of industrial mathematics who are practical and knowledgeable in the application of industrial mathematics to real life problem to meet national demands.
The Programme is to offer a sound educational preparation in Mathematics, Statistics, Business Administration, Accounting and Economics to all students enrolled for the discipline and to give them a firm foundation for effective participation in the society in general and in particular as Industrial Mathematicians.
The Programme aims to produce high level Industrial Mathematicians and to contribute through research towards the growth of Mathematics, Statistics and Economics, and solving problems arising in industries, business, government and the society in general.


Objectives
The objectives of this programme, Industrial Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics, University of Benin, include:
• to expand the scope of application of Industrial Mathematics discipline in order to promote and enhance national economic development.
• the need of the Industrial Mathematician to see himself as member of an organized team whose collaborative effort is required in order to achieve organizational objective.
• to facilitate the education and training of Industrial Mathematicians as managers and administrators.
• to produce graduates that are sound in Industrial Mathematics and are able to pursue research in Mathematics, Industrial Mathematics and related disciplines.
• to produce graduates with intellectual capacities to pursue careers which graduates in Mathematics can pursue.
• to provide courses and supervise research leading to higher degree of the University, and
• to facilitate the creation of computational spirit in young men and women who can help to exploit the available resources and opportunities in Nigeria.


Admission Requirements
(A) Four-Year Full Time Degree Programme (UME)
Candidates seeking admission into this Programme should possess any of the following qualifications:
(i) at lease five Ordinary Level credit passes in WASC/SSCE/NECO/GCE
(ii) at least five credit passes in Teachers Grade II Certificate Examination (T.C.II)
(iii) any recognized equivalent which must not be more than two sittings. The subjects should include English Language, Mathematics and any three of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Agricultural Science
The University Matriculation Examination (UME) subjects are;
• Use of English
• Mathematics
• Physics and
• any of Biology, Chemistry, Agricultural Science,
(B) Three-Year Full Time Degree Programme (Direct Entry)
In addition to the UME requirements above, candidates who possess any of the following qualifications may be considered for admission:
(i) at least two Advanced Level passes in the General Certificate of Education (GCE) or the Higher School Certificate (HSC) or any recognized equivalent in not more than two sitting. The subjects should include Mathematics, and any one of Statistics, Physics, Chemistry.
(ii) at least a merit-level pass in the University of Benin diploma in any of the following disciplines:
(a) Computer Science (DICS)
(b) Science Laboratory Technology (DSLT)
(c) Analytical and Industrial Chemistry (DAIC)
(d) Computer Engineering (DICE)
(e) Mathematics Education (DME)
(iii) Diploma from other recognized Universities with at least an upper credit level pass in the areas listed in B(ii) above.
(iv) Ordinary National Diploma (OND) with at least an upper credit level pass in Mathematics/Statistics or Computer Science or Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) from a recognized Polytechnic or College of Technology.
(v) Higher National Diploma (HND) with at least a lower credit level pass in Mathematics, Statistics or Computer Science or Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) in the relevant area from a recognized Polytechnic or College of Technology
(vi) Nigeria Certificate of Education (NCE) with at least a credit level pass in Mathematics and Statistics/Economics/Computer Science/Study from a recognized College of Education. In addition candidates should have at least an overall Credit level pass.
(vii) A Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree certificate in any of the Sciences or Social Sciences with at least 3rd Class Honours.
