History of the Programme
The Programme began in September 1978 as a sub-section of the Department of Mathematics in collaboration with Department of Economics and Statistics. With the rapid growth of banking institutions and financial houses in the country the application of Mathematics and Economics cannot be over-emphasized. It is a well-known fact that financial institutions cannot survive without the combination of Mathematics and Economics. The Programme is oriented towards the teaching of courses in Mathematics and Economics that will instigate an improved and prudent management of the nation’s economy. The programme is geared towards management of industry, banking, business, commerce and so on,
The enrolment of students into the Programme has continued to grow especially at the 100 and 200 levels. The trend is likely to continue in the future particularly because of the expanding services provided by this programme.


Philosophy
The Programme, Mathematics and Economics, is to offer a sound educational preparation in Mathematics and Economics to all students enrolled in this area and to give them a firm foundationfor effective participation inthe society in general and in particular asMathematics –Economists, Bankers, Financers, Administrators, Management Executives and allied professional.The Programme also aims to produce high level Mathematics-Economists and to contribute through research and publications towards the growth of Mathematics, Economics, prudent accountability and changing managerial, financial and banking responsibilities in Nigeria.


Objectives
The objectives of this programme, Mathematics and Economics in the Department of Mathematics, University of Benin, include:
• To continuing search to expand in the scope of application of the Mathematics and Economics discipline in order to promote and enhance national economic development.
• The need of the Mathematics-Economist to see himself as member of an organized team whose collaborative effort is required in order to achieve organizational objective.
• To facilitate the education and training of financial managers and administrators.
• To produce graduates that are sound in both Mathematics and Economics.
• To produce graduates with intellectual capacities to pursue careers which graduates in Mathematics or graduate in Economics can pursue.
• To provide courses and supervise research leading to higher degree of the University, and
• To facilitate the creation of computational and economical spirit in young men and women who can help to exploit the available resources and opportunities in Nigeria.


Admission Requirements
(A) Four-Year Full Time Degree Programme (UME)
(i) At least five Ordinary Level credit passes in WAEC SSCE/GCE, or NECO SSCE or
(ii) At least five credit passes in Teachers’ Grade II Certificate Examination (T.C. II) or
(iii) Any of the recognized equivalent at not more than two sittings. The subjects should include, English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any other two subjects selected from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Agricultural Sciences and Geography.
The University Matriculation Examination (UME) subjects are;
• Use of English
• Mathematics
• Economics and
• any of Physics Biology, Chemistry, Agricultural Science,
(B) Three-Year Full Time Degree Programme (Direct Entry)
In addition to the UME requirements,
(i) At least two Advanced Level passes in the General Certificate of Education (GCE) or the Higher School Certificate (HSC) or any of the recognized equivalent at not more than two sittings. The subjects should include Mathematics and Economics.
(ii) At least a credit level pass in the University of Benin Diploma in any of the following:
(a) Computer Science (DCS)
(b) Mathematics Education (DME)
(c) Accounting (DIA)
(d) Computer Engineering (DICE)
(iii) Diploma from other recognized Universities with at least an Upper credit level pass in the areas listed in B(ii) above.
(iv) Ordinary National Diploma (OND) with at least an Upper credit level pass in Mathematics/Statistics, Computer Science, Accounting or Business Studies from a recognized Polytechnic or College of Technology.
(v) Higher National Diploma (HND) with at least a lower credit level pass in Mathematics, Statistics, Mathematics/Economics or Computer Science or Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) in the relevant area from a recognized Polytechnic or College of Technology
(vi) Nigeria Certificate of Education (NCE) with at least a credit level pass in Mathematics and Economics from a recognized College of Education. In addition candidates should have at least overall credit level pass. in the Programme/Sub-Discipline/Discipline.
(vii) A Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree certificate in any of the Sciences or Social Sciences with at least 3rd Class Honours.
